Does the M46 take fluid?

Bob -- in addition to t-bone's suggestion, take a look at the state of the black sheet metal 'triangle' through which the clutch cable passes in the firewall. Make sure there are no tears or splits in the sheet metal. It's rare, but it's known to happen (yours truly). If that sheet metal tears, you'll never get a properly adjusted cable; the metal will just bend some more.
