Sounds like you have clutch issues, but yes the M46 takes fluid. Specifically type F ATF. I like, use and sell Amsoil Supershift Racing ATF (aka ART), it's a synthetic Type F ATF that works really nice in the M46.

I recommend a drain and flush with regular petroleum ATF Type F to start, then drain and fill with the ART.
