I'm no lawyer- but - 1988

My guess is you'd have to write the lender, get a "release" showing they
no longer hold a lien against the car, and then contact the state DMV to
get a new title with no liens. I'd call the DMV and see what steps they'd suggest. Whatever happens, you'll need a clear title in the end to rid yourself of the car, and that may mean some money on your part.
