Question About Storing Internal Engine Parts

I just bought a used camshaft, but it will be a couple months before I install it. It looks like it was removed, wiped off, and boxed. I'd like to clean it, inspect it carefully for any damage, and then box it up for storage. My question is what should I use to clean it (brake cleaner?) and what should I wipe it down with so that it doesn't rust?

Thanks.
