Exaust pipe before cat. 700

Hi All,
While we were driving today the exaust got considerably louder like the pipe broke. Upon a quick inspection I saw a round hole in the pipe before the catalytic converter. It looked like there was aplug in this hole. Could anyone give me advice on if there was indeed a plug there. There is also a depression in the pipe like something was pressed in there. Is it time for a new part? Just would like some pre work illumination if anyone has seen or done this before. Thanks
