strut replacement questions:

After reading all FAQ's concerning struts: I'm not clear if struts need replacing @ 100K freeway m,iles on 88 740 wagon or just inner shock. to be honest-whole strut replacement is the price of all other bushings and ball joints! that aside-would just replacing strut bearing and bushings-using existing spring -be satisfactory? do I need spring compressor to replace just inner shock tube? thank you mark
