940 Service Engine

Aaron,

Is this light the third from the left? Does it say "Service"? If so it is the service reminder light which comes on every 10K on the n/a 940s and at every 5K on the Turbo models. This is basically a reminder to change the engine oil. Of course I would recommend changing oil and filters at half that span. Using a good synthetic oil (Mobile 1 10w30 or Amsoil) and a Mann oil filter.

To reset the 940 service light ... look for a small, black, circular rubber plug in the clear plastic instrument face. It's located at the lower left of the speedometer. Remove the plug ... using a small phillips screw driver or similar small diameter object ... push the reset pin (which is located under that plug) in and reset the service counter. Turn the key on and start the engine and the service light should not come on if it has been properly reset. Then replace the plug and foget about it until it illuminates again.

If however the "engine check" light has come on (the first warning light on the left) Volvo says "The engine diagnostic system has detected a possible fault in the emission control system" That will require some investigation and possible repair. Hope this is helpful.

I hope what you have is the "Service" reminder indicator to deal with. That should be no problem.

Hope this helps.
