Re: windshield help 200 1988

Kris -

There's a good description of how to salvage a used windshield on the RWD FAQ page - it involves some piano wire etc. If the old windshield is removed properly and all the old urethane removed, it should seal again well IF PROPERLY INSTALLED. Installation is key here - my windshield had been replaced by a previous owner, but poorly, so that it leaked. (Apparently, the urethane glue dries rather quickly and so time is of the essence if you want it to seal correctly; also, using the appropriate amount of sealer is important). As I didn't have the confidence (or time) to reinstall the old windshield myself, I decided to take it to a glass shop, get a new one and have it done right - with a guarantee against leakage of course.

The price I paid for new (aftermarket) glass was $160 installed. You may wish to check with your insurance company, as most have a $100 deductible on glass, so you can get a totally new windshield installed with a guarantee against leakage for 100 clams. If your insurance covers it, you might as well get the replacement done at a dealer and have them put in a later model ('91 and later I think) Volvo original equipment windshield, as these have an integral exterior molding that looks much nicer and doesn't create as much wind noise as the old one (wish I had known this at the time mine was replaced!)

That's my two cents. Enjoy the new view -
