It is not the same type of unit. It is a beefed up unit that Laycock provides to RV manufacturers and it does not have the same bolt pattern as the J type. It is a larger diameter pattern.

The major difference, besides being beefed up, is the automatic's torque converter absorbs most of the shock load of OD engagement, something not possible with a clutch system, unless you disengage the clutch.

You are comparing jello and steak.
