Re: Why solder the Fuel Pump Relay? 700 1989

"Why solder the FPR? BECAUSE IT MIGHT BE BAD DUE TO A PROBLEM WITH YOUR FUEL PUMP(S)!"

True. But then again, it might not be. The solder and soldering process used for hi-volume automated production leads to a weak connection, and the solder crystallizes and cracks from age and vibration. Hand soldering uses MUCH better solder, and is a MUCH better process.

My wife's '91 740 quit in traffic a year ago. Yep — FPR connections were cracked. Resoldering brought it back to life, and it has been fine for a year and 15k miles. I'm confidant that my resoldering solved it, and that the pump had nothing to do with the FPR failure.

I figure it's better to spend $0 and 20 minutes on the attempt. After all, you coulda put a new $50 relay in your car, only to have a bad pump destroy it. And you still woulda been stuck in traffic. Furthermore, maybe your car had two impending (and independent) problems: A weak relay, and a tired pump.
