Radio static AM only

Something special my radio plays wonderfully on Fm or tape. Switch to AM

and the static starts. If it is a strong signal no static but get out in the boonies and it is a constant buzzing. NOT RPM related. Turn off the engine everything is just fine great reception. OK where do I start looking for the problem? Any ideas?
