I'm using the same alternator on my 544; I've learned a couple of things.

You MUST use an SEV regulator; Bosch or generic aftermarket ones will do just as you say. I'm betting this is your problem.

1 dead or disconnected diode in the alternator will also do it, but worse than you describe.

If you leave the battery chronically undercharged, it will die soon.
