mitsu/garret turbo interchangable?

I have a 1987 740 turbo 260k miles. the turbo needs to be replaced. I dont know which one i have. do i need to replace a garret turbo with a garret (and mitsu with mitsu), are they wired differently? or do all the watercooling hoses, intake and exhaust hoses have the same attachments and orientation so regardless of which i have now i can order which ever as a bolt on replacement. lastly, Is one better than the other?
