Typical old OD problem: worn piston seals.

A possible temporary cure is to use a synthetic type F ATF which will not thin out as much as it heats up; it worked for my '87. The real cure is to replace the seals, which have been upgraded over the years.

I guess as the last gasp before pulling the OD, you could try something like 20W-50 motor oil, synthetic is better.
