My niece wants to buy my old VW Jetta Diesel to replace hers which died, so I need to replace it to continue some biodiesel experiments. I passed up an '84 240 wagon because it had a lot of floor rust, but I now am looking at an '85 740 turbodiesel wagon with lots of GLE goodies, bad paint and headliner, but no rust -- and 237,000 miles. I can handle an engine overhaul just fine (or eventually stuff in the Ford 302 sitting in my dad's shop), but I'm wondering: does this model have the less respected ZF automatic transmission? I can't really get it up in the air to check. Do I recall correctly that you can tell by the absence of the usual Aisin-Warner overdrive button?
