Need handicapped electrical engineer ALL 51

This is completly off the Volvo topic, but this board is populated by a fairly diverse group, so maybe someone out there can steer me in the right direction. I have a good friend who is suffering from MS, and is getting to the point where mobility is becoming a problem. We figure a good alternative to the scooter/chair thing is to take a 50cc Honda step through scooter for transport around town, then add a small sidecarlike devise with an electric motor, battery and controller driving the third wheel for use in malls and such. Electric wheelchairs are way too expensive to buy to scavenge the parts from, so we need a source for motors, etc. Does anybody out there have a bunch of experience with 12 or 24 volt systems that could be adapted to such a foolish hotrod type of use?
