Problem engaging reverse 200 1983

All,

I have only had this critter on the road for a few weeks and my wife informs me that reverse has failed to engage twice when the vehicle was cold. She said that it would engage drive without any problem but reverse was just like it was in neutral. After warming up reverse would engage and the tranny would function normally. I have never experienced this symptom myself, of course. :-\

I have no prior history on this vehicle and the only thing I have done to the trans is to change fluid and filter before I put the car into service. The trans seems to shift fine and positive and the overdrive is operational (after relay fix).

Is this a symptom of an old (164k miles) AW71 or is about to grenade on me?
