Agreed on the vacuum leak. Check and replace whatever you need to. Clean out the ENTIRE flame trap housing to even out the pressure properly.

Check the fuel pressure regulator for fuel... pull the vacuum hose off and see if raw gas comes out. That's a sure sign of trouble.

I'd also suspect the catalytic converter, despite the fact that it is a year old. The on-and-off nature of the problem is a lot like a cat with loose internals.
