Re: Overdrive - solenoid or relay? 200 1981

hi jim-

more likely it's the relay, but who knows. The relay is hidden behind the center console, in the upper right-hand corner nearest the glovebox. You could try swapping it with a known good one, or:

turn car to "run" (key position two) motor stopped, shift car into 4th, push button. Listen for the relay to click, and check for voltage with a test lamp at the terminals. You're looking for a terminal that's normally dead to switch to 12 volts positive when you push the OD button under these conditions. If the light's lit, the relay clicks, and you get 12 volts, check the wiring from the relay to the solenoid. Check to make sure that when the relay has clicked & the light is lit on the dash, the solenoid is getting 12 volts at its positive terminal. If it is, double check the ground from the solenoid to the chassis, and if that's good- the solenoid is probably shot.

Good luck-

Dylan
