I'm going to guess that you still have R-12 in your system.
My best guess would be that the system is low on refrigerant after the years, and that the best way to get the cooling capacity back is to get the proper refrigerant volume.
There are many variables, though. The compressor is one of them. The cooling fan in front of the condenser is another one. Actually, just thinking about it, you should clean the fins of the condenser with a very soft brush and some water. That alone can make a HUGE difference in cooling effectiveness.
Does the compressor cycle on and off a lot even in warm weather?
I converted to R134a (the 91-93 240s are simple to convert) and my system is ICE COLD except in the direct sun in city traffic. Otherwise it is really good.
