I use a waterpump pliers or channellock pliers to crush the old rotor...wrap a rag under the rotor so bits don't drop into the distributor.

Picked up the technique from old Saabs where the furshlugginer rotor is literally glued onto the shaft to keep it from working up/off and spinning in place (does wonders for timing....).
