I recommend using a good engine flush first. Best I know of are made by AMSOIL or BG. If you don't, or won't, use a flush, go ahead and change. Watch for any sudden increase in oil consumption. If you see that, change the filter and top off (the synthetic has cleaned out gunk and delivered it to the filter enough to start plugging it). You might want to drop the first batch of synthetic after 3-4,000 miles, particularly if you don't flush.
