ACC-Heater control questions-- 700 1986

I drive a 760 Turbo which I just bought early this past summer. I also have the automatic climate control in my car. I haven't been able to understand why and how the heater does what it does and its getting cold outside. If my engine is cold and I first turn the car on, I select Auto control on the air. The heater will not blow ANY air for a long time. Then when the engine temp needle seems to be pointing straight up the air kicks in. When the hot air finally starts to blow out it only blows straight up as if its defrosting. I want the air to blow out towards me so I slide the control lever over to the icon with arrows pointing out and down and it works. My question is... Why does my car take so much longer to heat up then my old 240GL from 1985 or my friends 940Gl from 1991? Also, why does the air not start blowing till really late? By the time the air comes on I'm already at my destination and it does me no good! And why does the air blow straight up to the windshield by default? Thanks!

Brian
