Thanks for the replies.
I opened and cleaned both switches. The one in the driver's door showed evidence of decades of use but cleaned up nicely. The rear door switch looked new. No change to the problem.
I took the window loose from the two points on the mechanism. The window slides up and down easily in the tracks- no binding.
After removing the window glass the mechanism operates flawlessly. Up and down without hesitation. So that is a surprise.
I have to walk away for now, but I will have an opportunity to reinstall the window later today and see what happens.
