Window malfunction

1991 745 125K

Late last night the rear window refused to move to the closed position.

When attempting to put the window up from the down position it would only travel about three inches before it would stop. It would go down again, but only go up the three inches again. Trying the driver’s switch or the rear door switch produced the same results.

The speed of the movement was normal. When I grasped the top of the window and gave it a bit of assistance it would move up an additional four or five inches. Repeated effects at assisting the movement would sometimes result in it going within three inches of the top, but nothing I did coaxed it to full closure.

Once the window would stop nothing I did would cause it to make a second effort at closing. I had to put the window down before it would show any response from the motor to raise it. There is no hesitation in the down function of the window.

It is easy enough to remove the switches and clean them which I will do first but since both switches produce the same response I have my doubts the problem is associated with delivering power to the motor.

Any suggestions appreciated.
