87 Rear Caliper Question – What are these things and do I need them? 200 1987

volvo4dv8 has it right. Those are part of the controlled crush zones Volvo designed into the later 240 series. Unbolt the panel hanging from the rear frame rail and you'll see it's one heavy piece of steel -- obviously a structural element - there to absorb energy as it tries to push the rear axle forward in a rear end collision. The installer of the rebuilt calipers is expected to switch it over. - Dave
