I would say also that the rear end maybe just fine. Another post stated that these rear ends are very robust.
That said, I will like to mention that a high pitch singing sound is more likely to be a drive shaft center support bearing. The setup under there is NOT as robust against water intrusion. It's a good example of how well spinning shafts and slinger rings work at deferring or detering a fluids migration!
It's just an ordinary double sided lip shield sealed bearing that sells for about 20 bucks. The rubber support cage is about $15.
With 200 k and some noise before hand, that comes and goes, is right on target to be that center support bearing.
If your previous mechanic only drove the car around town and did not have the car up in the air running or used microphones under the car, he is guessing as well!
The sound that is emitted from that bearing will sound like it coming from everywhere under there! Can't blame him missing that one if it turns out to be that shaft bearing because several people with these cars have found it hard to believe the first time around!
"Singing" is a dry rolling member that's actually sliding, which is really "screeching." This makes more flat spots as to match up to another buddies noise in there!
It is always headed to have even more that one and when that happens, the bearing gets tighter!
It then spins in the rubber mount.
When that rubber rips it becomes "look out time" for the next real rumble under there and it won't be a bearings sound of a rumble either!
The bearing is not held tight enough for one of those catastrophic failures!
Some people have sprayed a thin lubricants up in there and sometimes it stops only to confirm that is where it's coming from. DO NOT think for a moment that it is a repair!
Nice you post an update.
New motor mounts you said just got done?..... What about the driveshaft?
I would move on down the line towards the rear and feel out those U-joints for smoothness too!
It is the next thing to knowing you have your "out-house" sitting on solid ground!
