I'd bet on a mixture issue. Does the dead spot come back if you keep it in first for a minute or accelerate over 2500 rpm?

You can test the clutch by hitting the gas and brakes simultaneously as though trying to accelerate. If the clutch slips, then you know. Did you replace the pressure plate?

Did you remove anything on the other end of the engine?
