The smoke test is basically pumping large volumes of smoke into the fuel filter and looking for leaks.

I am not super familiar with the system as I have never had an issue with it but basically there are two vac lines and at least one goes all the way back to the tank. That would be my guess for the leak.

On BMW's from the 80's the actual canister would get waterlogged with fuel from overfilling the tank repeatedly. Not sure if it applies to our Bricks as well.
