The easiest and cheapest approach would be to raise the hood next time you hear it and try to use a mechanic's stethoscope to investigate the various sources like your timing belt tensioner, serpentine belt tension, alternator, water pump, power steering, a/c compressor clutch, etc....

Mechanic's stethoscopes are inexpensive and available in any decent auto parts store.
