Don't take this too unkindly but are you using the correct key? Maybe the old key in the new switch? I've taken the wrong set of keys out to a car and taken a few fuzzy moments before realising why the key won't fit.
A bit of steering wheel movement sometimes needed to clear the steering lock before the key will go in. Yes I know, basics, but we all get caught out sometimes.
