How do I "sync' the shift linkage back to correct? 700 1991

Unfortunately, while replacing my transmission kickdown cable, I "threw-off" the shift linkage.

The car will go forward no matter what gear I choose, R N D P.

I was able to get the car back into park by pushing the linkage shaft thing thats outside the transmission.

I want to know the procedure for putting the linkage back to correct.

Will I need to remove the transmission pan again to access the internal part?

Please help
