I don't know how it works either, but have had a multitude of successes doing it. Not exactly as Steve relates, though, using melted wax. I just apply a candle (ordinary birthday candles are plentiful and convenient) to the red hot fastener, which melts and then vaporizes the paraffin. It appears to wick into the threaded joint, and when the smoke clears, the parts separate with barely a squeak in protest.
Some brake line nuts are steel; some are brass.
