The additional circuit does just exactly what the name inverter says...it inverts the points opening signal to a points closed signal and vice versa...because the Bosch module is designed to trigger and put out a spark upon input trigger (magnetic/optical) closing condition...I expect that is why your "timing is off enough that the car wouldn't start." without it...without it, the module was giving a spark at the wrong time...
