I had the same problem shortly after getting my 122 on the road. It turned out to be the larger timing gear. Those gears were made of some kind of fiber composite and mine had formed a crack all the way around the hub.The timing and idle stayed mostly the same with small variences,so it took a while to find the problem. with the cooling fan out of the way the cover somes off pretty easy and the gears and no big deal to replace.
