how beat up can a control arm be before replacing? 700

The arm that is 90 degrees to the body is the control arm, and there are steel ones and aluminum. My current obsession has steel, and the faces where the conical bushings sit were oddly quite rusted so I replaced them with my friend's, also steel, which He had replaced with aluminum. For the record he didn't notice a difference in ride, which is what he was looking to affect.
The diagonal arm is steel and has a lot of coating on it. I think they are basically bulletproof and will last the life of several, if not many many, cars.
