For the 242 versus 140 decision, if you don't find the 140s that much cuter to look at than a 240, then you could think some more about the practicalities to help you decide: parts availability and the kinds of driving you do most of. I have both a 1971 144 (M40) and a 1988 240GL (AT)at the moment. If I'm going to be driving on fast roads, the 240 wins every time: it's much quieter and effortless at speed. If I'm likely to be stuck in traffic a lot or will be doing chores that involve repeated parallel parking the 240 also wins. But for pure joy of driving I'd have to say I prefer the 140.
