Advice - Handbrake not functioning as designed.

Hi all, parking up my '90 740 estate 16 valve the other day I pulled up on the handbrake and there was that bang sound/sensation and the lever went into near vertical - cables busted is first thought. Is there anything particular about fixing this - I've got a specialist Brake & Clutch company coming round home to recover old cable and do a remake - any advice to fast-track the technicians work. Thanks
