Duralast waterpump- bad experience

Last January while traveling South my low coolant sensor light came on in Birmingham.

A new (2500 miles) Hepu waterpump on our 1994 940T was leaking profusely out the shaft seals. I changed out the pump in the parking lot of a WalMart. I had found an AutoZone and they had a Duralast pump on the shelf. I was on vacation and needed a quick fix which the Duralast provided.

Now 3000 miles later the Duralast is leaking profusely out of the shaft seals.

I consider it a fluke that the new Hepu was defective. FCP Groton replaced that pump on warranty. I have never heard of a bad Hepu pump right out of the box and neither had FCP.

Just for the record the drive belt on the waterpump is not overtensioned. I run a black cap on this car. No excessive pressure in the system. It does not leak when pressurized unless it is running. It is definitely leaking past the shaft seals.

The low coolant light warned of some type of problem today and I was able to check it out, turn around and get home by adding a half liter of water. No over heating event that might have occurred an hour later into my drive.

The replacement Hepu goes on tonight.

Randy
