My Bentley notes the need for a spring compressor. See page 720-3. Chapter 720 covers not only coil springs but also struts. The following page, 720-4, has figure 9 showing a spring compressor in action as the upper bearing mount is being removed. Page 720-5 continues with disassembly to remove strut cartridges and adds a warning to use a spring compressor.
