B20F cam/lifters in a B18 engine 120-130

Cam clatters are commonly at idle or near, and quiet down at higher rpms when the cam gear gets into a constant pull. At lower rpms the came lobes push the cam forward as they pass their peak, and this makes the torque on the cam go back and forth, and with the angled teeth on the cam gears makes the cam rattle back and forth.

Piston slap would be most prominent on a cold engine. rod knocks can occur at almost any rpm, mostly on the overrun (when the engine is slowing rapidly) which can unload the rod bearings. You can also sometimes get a rod knock to occur on command by pulling the spark plug wire on the affected cylinder at idle.
