No reverse, sometimes 200 1993

My 1993 240 wagon sometimes doesn't reverse when the autobox is set to "R". On other days, it works perfectly fine. It's both annoying and dangerous because I'd have to almost floor the accelerator to get it reversing on occasions(!).

The previous owner has said this problem existed when he bought the car from the first owner but an ATF and auto-shift linkage bushing had supposedly cured that. The ATF was apparently changed about 9500K kms ago.

The auto trans shifts well and smoothly otherwise.

Do you guys have suggestions on how to go about diagnosing this problem?
