Keeping a Beater

Licensing cost is minimal for an older vehicle. In Georgia (the American one) it works out to $35 in ad valorem taxes.

Insurance is minimal as well. On an annual basis this car would cost me no more than $500 in much of the United States. It's safety record, low parts costs, low theft rating and low replacement costs all work in it's favor. You also would likely have only liability insurance instead of having collision due to it's low resale value.

I have dealer insurance which pays for whatever I drive. It used to be $1065 for a year but recently was hiked to $1334. I'm not happy about it, but at least it pays for whatever I drive.
