In removing flywheels I have found that using a long-handled wrench over center
(with the wrench handle facing the OPPOSITE side of the flywheel greatly reduces
the torque on the crank so you are less likely to turn the engine. A few sharp
raps on the wrench handle with a 3# hammer will usually break the bolts loose with
minimal engine turning. Quick and easy without additional rigamarole.
I would imagine it would be pretty much the same with the flex plate.
Note that there is an adaptor between the flex plate and the end of the crank.
You can usually pry it off by small increments from opposite sides with a screwdriver.
