Not sure where you are writing from. Here in California, a T5 with 140k on the clock is worth somewhere between 4 and 5k "regular" market value. We own three 98's. Two are GLTs, one is not a turbo. I watch prices on these cars regularly. Granted out here the cars seem to go for a bit more than back East or in the Midwest. I find that as soon as the cars are over about 100k here, they drop in value very quickly. In my opinion, people do not have the same confidence in the white motors that some of us do in the old cast iron engine cars. The FWD cars just don't seem to be holding their value as well, the legend just isn't there. That said, properly maintained, the cars are (again in my opinion) very durable. We put 160k on our 97 850 in three years and the car received virtually no maintenance outside of the routine stuff. Whoops, sorry, that's not true: we had to change the thermostat. A T5 is definitely a high performance car. I often hear people complain that their turbos don't give them the mileage they expected, but I'll be they have no complaints about the "whoosh". Thus, at 140k, I would definitely have the car checked out. If oil hasn't been changed regularly, the flame trap, turbo and oil returns lines could have issues that will need to be seen to. The factory belt on the 5 banger is rated at 100k, but I believe the aftermarket belts are rated at 50k. On a white engine, if there is ever even the slightest doubt about the mileage on the timing belt, change it. This is an interference engine. Loosing a belt will wipe out your valves at anything over idle speed.
Trouble spots: ABS controller is a known issue. However if the light is not on at 140k, it's probably already been changed. Oil return tube from the turbo and the dipstick are both problem areas. Dashboards do tend to be squeaky. We fix ours with rubber wedges on the sides by the glass. Steering column covers are prone to separation and breaking. Cupholders are weak and prone to breaking. AC hard lines seem prone to cracking on the low press. side. Air guide, the combination center strakes in the air dam/splash pan are usually bashed or missing. Power seats can be persnickety, but that seem not to be specific to this model Volvo. That's about it--in other words, no biggies. There have been several recalls including the main lighting switch, that Volvo will still perform for you.
