The tach suggestion to narrow the problem is a good one.
Cutout issues usually include both the Crank Positioning Sensor ( as mentioned)
The Fuses being slightly oxidized ( as mentioned)
the Fuel pump relay that might give you intermittent problems after heating up a bit.
I haven't heard it happening on a Volvo but the Coil could be breaking down after getting hot.
Rotating the fuses in their holders to slightly clean them is FREE
Taking the Fuel Pump relay out and open it up for a resoldering is FREE
and the Crank Sensor. Which I'm positive is ready to give you problems on an '89 is not too much money for peace of mind.
