87 240 Wagon Temperature Reading 200

Hi,

I have the above car with 240K miles. I bought it about 6 months ago. I have driven it in all kinds of conditions here in Washington, DC - stop-and-go traffic, 70 mph, etc. About 90% of the time, the temperature gauge is always between the 8:30 position and the 7:00 position. 10% of the time it is at the 9:00 position (this is the normal position).

Today I was driving in ordinary conditions around town (it was not a hot day and the traffic was light) and the gauge reached the 10:30 position. This was a first that it had ever gotten above the 9:00 position.

First off, why was my gauge so low under this range of driving conditions? Also, why was it so high today (it went back to normal after driving it at 70mph)? Should I just replace the thermostat in the radiator and see if that works?

Thanx,
Kreg
