4th gear lockout relay problem - what if I remove the relay and drive?

As suggested I pulled the relay and looked for cracks in the circuit board. Couldn't find any, but with the glove box out, I can thump the relay when the intermittent light comes on and sometimes it goes off. So I went ahead and ordered a new replay (cheaper than the solenoid, which might be next).

Sometimes the light doesn't go off but if I remove the relay completely, the light is off. What is the downside to driving with the relay removed, at least until I get the replacement?

THANKS.
