B20F lifter has fallen somewhere in engine...Precious advice needed, please.

I suspect you will be doing the headgasket sooner than later.

Like cdu said, I can't imagine how the lifter could have fallen into the sump with the cam in place. I would guess that you pulled the lifter out of it's bore and it is now lying real close to there. You may be able to fish around in there with a stiff wire and be able to prop it back in after removing the other pushrods, but I think the only way you are going to get it back in is by pulling the head. That is a pretty easy job.

If it fell into the sump, I'd still get it out of there. I think someone on the board here once left a lifter in the sump and it somehow lodged against a rod cap while the engine was running...ouch!
