Moisturizer rubber /plastic

Herb,

The old VW guru most likely used glycerin. I have used it on wiper blades to restore flex. It does soften old rubber. It takes a few treatments but the rubber improves with each wipedown.

The only problem with glycerin is that it is water soluble and only treats to a shallow depth. It also offers no protection from UV, harsh chemicals, etc.

I would use one of the specialty rubber products from a reputable company.
